about

«Visions of the unknown» is Geir Hermansens first record for Maksimal and his fifth record under his alias «Velferd». Releases at Prins Thomas’ label Full Pupp, Norwegian Untz Untz Records and the Italian label Hell Yeah! Recordings as well as participation in bands such as The New Wine, Put Your Hands Up For Neo-Tokyo, ThisGoesDisco! And Fagernes Yacht Klubb has formed and influenced Hermansen as a musician as well as a composer.

His ambition with this record was to compose music inspired by various science fiction. Hermansen has a profound love for 60s, 70s and 80s science fiction movies such as Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dune and a host of others. Here he has composed a record for both listening and dancing in equal measure, where the mood and atmosphere as well as choice of sounds point to a distant, futuristic time and place. There is some optimism and hope throughout the six tracks, but with synths such as DX7, Mono/poly, Korg Delta and minor chords, scales and melodies, Hermansens paints an uncertain and complex picture of the future.

The fast tracks on the record and Hermansens immaculate playing would certainly please a certain Paul Hardcastle. Vangelis and Lindstrøm have of course been pioneers for this type of music direction for years, but you could certainly draw parallels to composers who were way ahead of their time such as Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and John Carpenters film scores.
